Endometriosis is a common condition in reproductive-aged women where abnormal tissue grows on pelvic organs. It can cause pelvic pain, painful periods, painful sex and/or infertility.
Endometriosis is often suspected in women with pelvic pain and tender pelvic organs. Ultrasound may reveal enlarged ovaries due to the developed of cysts call endometriomas. The definitive diagnosis of endometriosis is made by laparoscopic surgery.
Treatment may involve medication and sometime surgery. If endometriotric cysts, severe pelvic pain or infertility develop, the best option is outpatient laparoscopic surgery to remove the abnormal tissue and any scar tissue.
